Writing for Readers: Preparing for Publication Beyond Academia
This workshop aims to assist participants to rework their research for publication for a broader audience. A practical introduction to the publishing process is presented by key industry figures, who will encourage participants to consider:
- The content - what aspects of your research will interest the general reader?
- Who exactly is your potential market?
- The form - Book? Newspaper opinion piece? Magazine essay? Exhibition? Documentary? Website? What is the best way to get your message across
- The style - how to write for the general reader rather than an examiner
Writing for readers will help you make the transition from a readership of three to a readership of three thousand (or more!)

On completion, participants will have: an en-hanced professional image and self-confidence achieved through the awareness of non-verbal behaviour, vocal delivery techniques to gain and maintain attention, and strategies for fielding questions; a process to organise and edit thoughts and content to allow them to think on their feet and/or meet their listeners' needs; clear guidelines for designing and using visuals aids in a variety of situations.
