Academic Orientation Program for International Postgraduate Students (AOPIPS), Semester Two 2008
This program has been specifically designed by the School of Graduate Research to meet the needs of international postgraduate students commencing and continuing with their studies at the University of Melbourne. Faculty Deans and academic staff strongly support this program and recommend that all international postgraduate students participate in this program, in addition to the range of other orientation activities.
The program is run in two parts:
- A week-long postgraduate orientation program held as part of the University-wide orientation program, and
- A series of seminars and courses held throughout the semester.

Studing at Melbourne University: Strategies for Success
Time: Monday 21 July, 2-3.30pm
Venue: Multifunction Room, Graduate
Centre (Building 198, map reference K20)
In this seminar, an adviser from the Language and Learning
Skills Unit (LLSU), and a panel of experienced graduate students
will provide insights into graduate study at the University of
Melbourne. The discussion will examine strategies that will give
you a good start to your studies and explore some of the pitfalls
to avoid.

Getting Top Marks: Writing for Academic Assessment

This session will introduce international graduate students to the
essential steps in planning, researching, drafting and revising
written assessment tasks. We will consider what it means to
answer all parts of the question, address assessment criteria,
and present an argument. Tips will also be provided on avoiding
common ESL mistakes.

Making Connections & Enhancing Your Academic and Social Connectedness
Time: Wednesday 23 July, 10am-1pm
Venue: Multifunction Room, Graduate Centre (Building 198, map reference K20)
An important part of university academic and social life is making connections within the University and beyond, getting information from the right person/resources, finding out who is who in your graduate school/department, where to go for advice/help and, most importantly, meeting other students and staff. This interactive session will help you to do this and to explore your aspirations and expectations as a graduate student new to Melbourne and the University. Come along to this interactive session with your questions and be inspired to engage and make new connections with others as a start to your graduate learning journey at the University. Understanding Australian Slang
Time: Thursday 24 July, 11.30am-12.30pm
Venue: Multifunction Room, Graduate Centre (Building 198, map reference K20)
This session will expose students to a range of new expressions and will include some practical activities. Participants are encouraged to bring along examples of Australian words or expressions they have heard but don't understand.

Australian Cultural Values
Time: Friday 25 July, 9am-12noon
Venue: Multifunction Room, Graduate Centre (Building 198, map reference K20)
This seminar aims to help international graduate students
understand Australia's society and people. It introduces key
Australian values, and explains how these shape the way
Australians think and behave. Working in small groups, students
will explore the differences between Australian culture and
their own cultures and how these differences may impact on
their studies, social life and everyday activities. Morning tea is
included.
