Melbourne School of Graduate Research

Welcome from the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Graduate Research)

2008 will be as significant a year for the Melbourne School of Graduate Research (MSGR). For the first time in our history, we will be joined by several new faculty-based graduate schools. With our particular focus on graduate research training, we are uniquely placed among these emerging schools.

A review undertaken during late 2007 recognised several of our key functions as crucial in the new University context. These included our oversight role with respect to research higher degrees; our extensive suite of enrichment and skill development programs; our position as an independent arbiter of disputes and grievances; and our development of innovative and best practice policies with respect to research higher degree candidature and completion. MSGR will continue, and in many cases expand, these activities during 2008.

The School has long been a leader in graduate education and acknowledged for our support of the graduate research experience. To this end, we will also maintain our collaboration with faculties and graduate schools on the development of research higher degree policy and performance management. Our role and responsibilities with respect to PhD candidature management are likely to change when the new Student System is launched during the year. MSGR will continue to play an important role in admissions, confirmation and examination, and these responsibilities will be widened to include all RHD candidates – PhD and Research Masters. However, all students will have access to a wider range of options with respect to transactional services, many of which will be available through the new Student Centres.

If you're a new research candidate, I'd like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the Melbourne School of Graduate Research and wish you all the best with your study. For those further into your research journey, welcome back to another busy year!
